ABOUT ME

Hello! My name is Emily Glenn-Smith, and I currently reside in the Boston area, where I teach American Sign Language courses at both Harvard University and Boston University. Previously, I directed the American Sign Language Program at the State University of New York at Buffalo for approximately 15 years. Over the years I have taught ASL both at the university level and in a community education setting. My experience spans from teaching basic ASL to a variety of advanced ASL level courses and workshops in the field of ASL interpreting. In addition to teaching ASL, I have developed various curricula to suit the needs of specialized programs.

My expertise lies at the university level, working with students who are learning ASL as a second language, or L2 learners. While I infuse students with a passion for learning ASL, I also place a strong emphasis on the value of both language and culture learned simultaneously. I teach with the hope that my students will not only develop an understanding and respect of American Sign Language and Deaf culture, but also retain the core values they learn and apply their knowledge in their careers and daily lives in their future. I believe very strongly that teaching language and culture are inseparable. With a solid understanding, one student at a time, we can lessen the ignorance, and the linguistic and cultural barriers facing our worlds.
